Do I really care?
by SuesBlog on

If you're anything like me sometimes you ask yourself some tough questions.

In amongst fundraising and talking to groups and admin I've sometimes asked myself do I really care about the kids we help week by week or am I just caught up in activity and the need to feed mouths?

Last week I had a Skype meeting with one of our orphanage projects, for the sake of privacy of the child involved I won't say which project. Often I'll say hi to children in our care (on Skype) its a great opportunity to connect with them and follow their progress.

Last week the child I spoke with aged 10 years had just been diagnosed with cancer. His carers had discovered a lump on his neck. He's since been back to the hospital a couple of times. His diagnosis is not good. He will require chemotherapy. We are still awaiting results from other tests.
My heart broke for him, there he stood in front of us his normally thick hair shaved off. He'd grown since I last saw him.  I know his story, we were there in the very early days of his life, he's already had so much sorrow and hardship to now know he has this new battle to fight it just felt so unfair. His story is mentioned in my book, he is one of the abandoned rescued. He doesn't have parents around him, or his own family. If ever  there's a time you need a parent surely its when you're not well. He smiled and we talked about his birthday. He'd like a robot for his birthday. I'll see what I can find here in NZ that will not be available in his home country. Its a blessing he's young and does not understand the road ahead.

When the Skype call ended I couldn't get the lump from my throat. It felt like a close relative was in pain.  I shed some tears for him and tried to think positively about the resilience of children and our God being larger than all of this.

I was comforted knowing that good loving people are around him and that we're doing everything we can, as much as a parent would to ease his load. I was so thankful that he had come into our care.

We really do care for these kids and we really do love them like our own. It showed me afresh the depth of feeling and the tremendous value of the work we do amongst those most vulnerable.

Loving and rescuing children is a wonderful privilege and there's nothing else I'd rather be doing.

Hoping and praying for a positive outcome.

So many more to love..........

It started with a coffee.
by SuesBlog on

Cappuccino in hand I sat at the cafe with Kate from our office talking fundraising.
I talk fundraising a lot. How do we not when there are so many children out there that need help?  We're not going to feed and clothe and care for kids without cash.
This day we began talking about a cookbook for Orphans Aid International, everyone loves food!
With a growing support base to draw from, we were sure we could pull together a great book.
The name came to us a week or so later and the wheels were in motion. Kate did a great job of compiling the book and spent many volunteer hours pulling it together.
I shot an email off to John Key our Prime Minister and next thing we even had his favorite family recipe. We were on a roll.
We dedicated the cookbook to a young girl who had arrived at Casa Kiwi ( our home for abandoned children) in Romania October 2010. She has since been adopted to a very suitable family.
The strange thing was the book was printed as I was taking leave to write my Rescue book, so I had little time to promote our fundraising "Help the World Cookbook"
But a month or so later after selling our cookbook on-line through our website. I had an email that first I thought was spam. It was Edouard Cointreau emailing me to see if we would like to exhibit our cookbook at the Paris Cookbook Fair.
Not sure of the validity of the email I made some phone calls, one of which was to Edouard who was in Hong Kong. Yes it was valid and a warm invitation was extended to me to go to Paris. One thing led to another and next thing I had some wonderful supporters even paying for my travel costs!
I would travel from Paris on to the Ukraine afterwards and meet up with our orphanage workers.

A few days before  leaving  for Paris the devastating earthquake of Feb 22nd hit Christchurch.

It was unbelievable, we quickly launched an appeal and began making plans to assist. I sent an email to The Paris Cookbook Fair, could they assist in some way ? Christchurch needed our help.

Once in Paris I navigated my way around the underground and came up a few short blocks from the Eiffel tower there I met with Thierry Bertman, who proceeded to tell me they wanted to produce a book as a fundraiser for Christchurch.

The next week at the Fair I spent my days speaking with Celebrity Chefs and cook book authors, running around with Thierry to gather content and support for our book. The wheels were in motion. Evert Kornmayer would kindly publish the book in Germany.

Fast forwarding a year the book is complete.  Of course a lot more has happened in between but the 7th March at the opening party of the Paris Cookbook Fair 2012 a book will be launched with recipes from the wonderful people I met a year ago and the proceeds, yes they're earmarked for Christchurch.

I can't wait to lay my hands on a copy. They'll be available in Paris and Europe before NZ.

Christchurch has a huge journey ahead of her and this book has a small but important part to play.  Every contribution will help rebuild.

Looking foreword to having the new charity cookbook in one hand and a cappuccino in the other.

Thanks to everyone who has helped bring this together.

It can't be February already!!
by SuesBlog on

Tanks are recharged and its time to embrace another year!

One of the unexpected pleasures I've had this holiday period is people making contact with me that I haven't heard from for many years,  some 20 or more years.

They've found themselves reading my Rescue book only to discover they actually know the author or knew me as Sue Anderson, my maiden name.

One of these people is even a senior reporter of a regional newspaper offering to write a story! Just awesome.

This year has begun to unfold very positively. Another joy was receiving a draft copy of a charity cookbook being put together for Orphans Aid International by a German Publisher.

One year ago I was packing my bags to go to Paris after being given an invitation and ticket to the Paris Cook Book fair. Our humble fundraising cookbook had been invited to Paris. A year later the story is still unfolding and fingers crossed we'll be able to fundraise through our new book for victims of the Canterbury Earthquake, the book will of course be launched in Paris! I'll be sure to keep you posted!!

It seems books are becoming part of my life and I must say I've discovered a hidden passion.

Judging by the feedback I've been receiving others have been enjoying my book as well!

If you haven't managed to lay your hands on a copy why not ask your local library to order a copy. That way you get to read it and it becomes available for many others after you.

Who knows it may even connect with others who have dreams and hopes to care for the abandoned as well?  Or perhaps it sparks desires in people we don't even know to step out and follow their dreams. I really hope so.

It may even ignite something afresh in you!

Heres to a great 2012 for you and all you do for the " Least of These"

It surely can't be February already!!!

Book has gone off with a blast!
by SuesBlog on

The last two weeks have been quite unbelievable. Its almost two weeks since my "Rescue" book was available to purchase.

Its a strange feeling to write a book to spend house and hours, years in fact working on it and then to find people want to read it!

Then the strange thought that people will know stuff about you they never knew before, I don't know what I was thinking when I was working on it but it never quite dawned on me till last week.

I've been really spurred on by the number of people that have bought one book read it in a matter of days and come back to buy more as gifts. I've taken that as an OK that the book had to have some merits. I wouldn't buy more copies of a book I hadn't enjoyed!

With the busyness of Orphans Aid International and family life I've found it hard to spend time getting distribution channels but despite the limited hours as far as book sales, I thought it would take about 3 months to sell what we have in the last two weeks!

The space the books occupied is halved and we've managed to get the books distributed nationwide! From Whangarei to Invercargill through Manna bookstores, independent bookstores and individuals plus of course our Orphans Aid International Op shops!

Thanks to everyone who has been so encouraging the last two weeks. The book reviews will begin before long and also the opportunity to get in front of other media.

I can't wait...

My biggest question is when do I put in another order, the books are going very very fast!!!

A new and happy author!

Sue

Five sleeps to go!!
by SuesBlog on

My book has arrived! It looks fabulous and from Monday it will be available from our Op shops, office or on-line. Hopefully in time I'll also be able to distribute them wider.

I was going to hold a book launch to celebrate but lifes too exciting to squeeze that in. Maybe I'll have a series of launches around the country when things settle down??

Thanks to all of you that voted for me recently. Part of the craziness has been on returning from India and Africa we went straight into facebook voting for the prestegious Grahame Maher Vodafone award. As a result of your help I was shortlisted to one of three finalists representing the WORLD! So NZ was right up there which was awesome. Sadly though I didn't receive the winning prize of 100,000 pounds but I did receive a  runner up prize of 10,000 pounds for Orphans Aid International and had the most amazing experience in Qatar in the Middle East.  I'm certainly very happy about that and am delighted for Frederique the winner who is helping street children in Peru.

I'm excited that my book will share my story in a way I  haven't been able to do before. Hopefully as a result we'll be able to help more children and hopefully more people like yourself will be able to also take a risk and reach out to those others have forgotten.

Thanks for your votes,
Thanks Jenny Maher and all the Wonderful Vodafone World of Difference people. Thank you Graham Maher for being a legend!
Thank you Carl and the boys for letting me pursue!

Its not too early to purchase a book. We can post one Friday you'll have  it next week.
